Third grade is an exciting and challenging year full of many new experiences. It is a year that marks the transition into an intermediate learning environment. Students will become more independent learners and will learn to become more responsible for themselves as well as their work. This is the first year that students will switch classes and must adjust to the different teaching styles of multiple teachers. This has been implemented as a way to enhance our curriculum and prepare students for standardized testing.
Daily math covers a variety of math skills including a great emphasis on multiplication facts. Multiplication is practiced through the use of speed drills, chart incentives, games, and activities. Students have additional math practice that is infused with technology through the use of an online test prep program called Study Island. Our reading program consists of vocabulary, comprehension skills, and story elements. Spelling and grammar skills correlate with reading lessons. We have also incorporated a writing workshop that focuses on learning to compose detailed stories with the use of figurative language. Science primarily focuses on Life Science and offers an exciting discovery of plants, animals, and ecosystems through the use of hands-on experiments, projects, and technology. A highlight the students look forward to each year is our annual recycling project.
